Lip Augmentation

What is lip augmentation?

Lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that is applied to beautify, plump up, shape, rejuvenate the lips and to correct asymmetries and reduce upper lip lines. Hyaluronic acid is mostly used for this purpose.

What is hyaluronic acid?

This substance normally exists in our skin. It is a sugar molecule that holds water and gives elasticity to the skin. Therefore, it does usually not cause allergies. There are different types of hyaluronic acid that are thick, moderately-thick, thin and the ones used for mesotherapy purposes. Thus, a natural appearance can be achieved. Hyaluronic acid is not permanent. It dissolves in 6-12 months. It can also be easily dissolved in case of any problem. Lip augmentation is usually known as lip botox among the people. However, botox material is not used in lip augmentation.

How is lip augmentation performed?

Hyaluronic acid fillers are generally kept in 1 cc tubes. The lip is first anesthetised with an anaesthetic cream. Sometimes local anaesthesia can also be applied. Filler material is injected to the lip with the help of a fine needle or cannula (a non-piercing needle). It should definitely be applied individually. Lip augmentation in particular should be done considering the golden ratio, which is accepted as a common beauty criterion in the world. The shape and facial proportion of each lip is different. Teeth structure is also important. Therefore, augmentation should be done considering both teeth and face proportions.

What to expect after lip augmentation?

Lip augmentation shows its effect immediately after the procedure. However, there may be mild swelling on the lips due to edema on the procedure day. Edema and bruising can be seen especially 1-2 days after the procedure. Lip augmentation takes its final shape in 3 weeks. The ones who want to have plump lips may be disappointed during this period. When the edema relieves, lips shrink. They achieve a nice fullness and beautiful shape. The ones who want to have plumper lips can have fuller lips that are permanent for long time if they have lip augmentation 1-3 times at the interval of 2-5 months.

What are the side effects after lip augmentation?

In general, there may be bruising for 1-4 days, edema for 1-2 days and mild hardness for 1 months. Lemon juice, blood thinners and aspirin-like painkillers that can dilute blood should not be taken until a few days before the procedure. You should not drink much coffee on the day of procedure. Ice application is useful after the procedure.
