Eyelid Surgery

As the thinnest skin of your body is on the eyelids, the first signs of aging are seen around the eyes, which creates an upset, tired and old-looking appearance on the face. Sagging of the upper eyelid sometimes even affect the vision negatively.

Eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure applied to improve the appearance of eyelids. Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids and both. Whether you want to improve your appearance or are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids, eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes.

The procedure we call eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is the only solution that can be applied to remove excess skin around the eyes and recover resulting wrinkles and under-eye bags

How is eyelid surgery performed?

In this procedure, which can be easily applied with local anaesthesia, it is essential to remove the excess skin and reshape subcutaneous fat tissue (under-eye bags).

The eyelid consists of four structural layers: skin, muscle, fascia and fat pouches. In the upper eyelid; there are fat pouches in the interior and midline, and the lacrimal gland in the outer line. In the lower eyelid; there are fat pouches in the interior, midline and outer line. In upper eyelid surgery, upper eyelid is anesthetised with local anaesthesia. The excess skin is removed and then a part of the underlying muscle is removed as well. Fat pouches in the interior and midline are reached and some parts of the herniated fat pouches are removed. The skin is closed with dissolvable stitches and the procedure is terminated.

Lower eyelid surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The skin and muscle are removed. Fat pouches in the interior, midline and outer line are reached and some parts of the herniated fat pouches are removed. Later, some parts of the excess muscle and skin are removed. The skin is closed with dissolvable stitches and the procedure is terminated.

How are the scars hidden in eyelid surgery?

The incision lines of eyelid surgery are designed to hide the resulting scars within the natural structures of the eyelid area.

Upper lid can be corrected through an incision to be made inside the natural fold on the eyelid. This allows fat deposits to be removed or repositioned, muscles to be tightened and the excess skin to be removed.

The problems in lower eyelid can be corrected through the incision to be made right below the lower eyelash line. Through this incision, the excess skin on the lower eyelid is removed. In the same way, excess fat can be repositioned or removed.

A transconjunctival incision created on the inner side of lower eyelid is an alternative technique to correct lower eyelid problems and to redistribute or remove the excess fat. Skin removal cannot be achieved with this technique.

It is important that surgical incisions are not subject to excessive force, abrasion or movement during healing period.

How is the recovery period after eyelid surgery?

Most patients complete the recovery period within 10-14 days. However, full recovery may take several months.

As the swelling and bruises disappear after the surgery, the shape of eyelids is seen more clearly; the face looks firmer and younger. Lubricating ointment and cold compresses can be applied during eyelid surgery.

You will be provided with special instructions including how to care your eyes and what to pay attention for the operation site and your general health and how medications can help healing and how to use them to complete the treatment.

During the recovery period, you may have some disturbances such as swelling, irritation and dry eyes that can be intervened with medication, cold compress and ointments.

You should use sun protection and black-coloured sunglasses when going outside until the recovery period is fully completed.

Bruises and swelling that will occur around the eyes will reduce in 3 to 5 days and the person can easily return to work the next day of the surgery. You will encounter a dramatic change on your face after this short and painless procedure.
